A Plethora of Ways to Experience Africa

THE ADVENTIS TRAVEL SERIES · Part 1 of 3
From winding coastal roads and remote 4x4 adventures to private aircraft and extraordinary safari experiences, discover Africa your way.
Africa is not a destination you experience in just one way.
It is a continent of extraordinary contrasts, where golden savannahs give way to ancient deserts, tropical forests, dramatic coastlines and vibrant cities. One day, you could be following elephant tracks through the bush. The next, flying above a maze of waterways or watching the sun sink into the ocean after a day of adventure.
And how you get there can be just as memorable as what awaits you.
Perhaps you dream of the freedom of a self-drive road trip. Maybe you'd prefer an expert to take the wheel while you enjoy the scenery. Or perhaps you'd rather board a small aircraft and watch the wilderness unfold beneath you as you fly towards a secluded safari lodge.
There is no single right way to explore Africa. The best approach depends on where you want to go, who you're travelling with, the time you have and the experiences you want to take home.
At Adventis, we believe your journey should be designed around you.
1. Take the Wheel: Africa by Self-Drive
There's something wonderfully liberating about having the keys to your own adventure. You decide when to stop for photographs, where to pause for lunch and whether to spend another hour enjoying a beautiful view.
South Africa is an excellent option for combining a road trip with safari, coastlines, cities and scenic routes. Explore the Cape Peninsula, follow the Garden Route or enjoy a self-drive safari in designated areas of Kruger National Park.
Namibia is a dream for travellers drawn to vast landscapes and open roads. Discover the towering dunes of Sossusvlei, the desert scenery of Damaraland and wildlife around Etosha National Park.
Botswana, Kenya and Tanzania offer wonderful wilderness experiences, but self-driving in remote safari regions can be significantly more demanding. Deep sand, rough tracks, seasonal flooding, long distances and limited services may make an experienced local driver or guide the better choice.
Before choosing a self-drive itinerary, consider your driving experience, the season, vehicle requirements and how comfortable you are navigating unfamiliar roads.
A road trip should give you freedom to explore, not leave you exhausted from spending every day behind the wheel.
2. Go Off the Beaten Track: The 4x4 Adventure
For some travellers, the real adventure begins when the tarred road ends.
A 4x4 expedition can open the door to remote landscapes, secluded campsites and wilderness routes that ordinary rental cars cannot manage. Depending on the destination, you might travel through desert terrain, across sandy tracks or into areas where preparation is essential.
Namibia is particularly appealing for adventurous road trips, while Botswana offers remote wilderness routes for suitably equipped and experienced travellers. South Africa also has designated 4x4 routes and more remote landscapes to explore.
These journeys can be extraordinary, but they require careful planning. Water crossings, soft sand, changing weather and long distances without assistance can create serious challenges. Some routes are best tackled with an experienced guide or as part of an organised expedition.
With the right preparation, however, a 4x4 adventure can offer a sense of independence and discovery that is difficult to replicate.
3. Sit Back and Enjoy the Journey: Private Road Transfers
Not every traveller wants to drive, and you certainly don't have to.
Private road transfers allow you to move between airports, hotels, safari lodges and other destinations while someone else manages the logistics.
Imagine settling into a comfortable vehicle after a long international flight, watching the landscape change while your driver navigates the route. You can relax, enjoy the scenery and spend time with the people you love.
Local expertise can be especially valuable in regions where roads are rough, routes are unfamiliar or conditions change with the seasons.
South Africa's main tourist routes are generally well developed, while parts of Namibia involve long stretches of gravel road. Accessing remote safari areas in Botswana, Zambia or Zimbabwe may require travelling on sand, mud or uneven tracks. In parts of East Africa, long drives and rough park roads can also make journey times unpredictable.
An experienced driver who understands the region can help you travel more comfortably and plan realistic connections between destinations.
Sometimes, the best luxury is simply having someone else take care of the details.
4. Take to the Skies: Fly-In Safaris and Private Aircraft
Africa is vast, and travelling between destinations by road can consume valuable holiday time. In some regions, a short flight can replace hours of driving and allow you to spend more time enjoying the wilderness.
Botswana's Okavango Delta is renowned for fly-in safaris, with small aircraft connecting remote camps. In Kenya and Tanzania, domestic flights can link major safari regions, including selected camps in the Maasai Mara and Serengeti. Flights can also provide access to remote safari areas in Zambia and Zimbabwe.
For travellers who value privacy and flexibility, a private jet charter may help connect major cities and selected regional destinations. Smaller aircraft, meanwhile, are often used to reach safari camps with limited airstrip infrastructure.
The right arrangement depends on the route, aircraft, baggage restrictions, airstrip requirements and weather. A private jet will not necessarily fly directly to every lodge, so a combination of aircraft and road transfers may be the most practical solution.
The reward? Less time travelling overland and more time experiencing the places you came to see.
5. Explore by Boat: A Different Perspective
Africa's waterways reveal a side of the continent that you cannot experience from the road.
A boat safari offers a slower, more observational way to encounter nature. You might glide along the channels of Botswana's Okavango Delta, watch elephants gathering at the water's edge or discover birdlife along the riverbanks.
In Zambia and Zimbabwe, selected river experiences offer opportunities to explore the Zambezi and other waterways. Depending on the destination, you might also enjoy guided canoe excursions, kayaking or coastal sailing.
And if the ocean is more your style, Africa offers wonderful opportunities for snorkelling, diving, island-hopping and marine adventures.
Boat experiences vary by location and season, with water levels, weather and safety conditions influencing what is available.
6. Walk on the Wild Side
A walking safari offers a very different connection with the wilderness.
Instead of covering distance in a vehicle, you slow down and notice the details: animal tracks in the sand, the sounds of the bush, plants that sustain the ecosystem and the smaller creatures that are easy to overlook.
South Luangwa in Zambia is particularly celebrated for walking safaris, while selected areas in Zimbabwe and private reserves elsewhere in Africa offer guided experiences too.
Beyond the bush, Africa has extraordinary hiking and trekking opportunities. You could explore the Drakensberg in South Africa, hike through Namibia's dramatic landscapes or trek through the forests of Uganda and Rwanda on a guided gorilla trek.
These experiences require appropriate fitness, preparation and professional guidance, especially where wildlife or challenging terrain is involved.
7. Combine Different Ways to Travel
Why choose just one?
Some of the most rewarding itineraries combine several travel styles. You could begin with a self-drive road trip through South Africa, continue with a guided safari at a private game lodge and finish with a few days on the coast.
Alternatively, fly between remote safari camps in Botswana, enjoy a private transfer to your next destination and spend your final days exploring a city or island.
A combination itinerary can help balance adventure with comfort, independence with expert guidance and activity with time to relax.
The secret is choosing the right mix for your interests, travel time and preferred pace.
